The Witcher 3’s expansion reveal is scheduled for next month

CD Projekt Red sent us all scurrying for our calendars when it announced, last May, that 2015’s The Witcher 3 would be getting a brand-new expansion in the year of our lord 2027. It’s called Songs of the Past, it’s set to be “a little bit closer to Blood and Wine” in terms of size, and it’s being co-developed alongside Fool’s Theory, the studio that’s also remaking the first Witcher.
And that, for now, is pretty much all we know. But take heart, because ‘knowing perhaps a small amount more’ is just around the corner. In a post on X, CDPR announced that Songs of the Past would show its face as part of Gamescom’s Opening Night Live eventโ€”the secret third Geoff Keighley annual thing which I forget about every yearโ€”on August 25.

Our Path to #gamescom 2026 starts with #OpeningNightLive. On August 25, catch a glimpse of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past during the show!๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Mark your calendars: watch ONL on August 25 at 11am PT / 2pm ET / 8pm CEST pic.twitter.com/6nCKo9ETbkJuly 21, 2026

I think I might be more intrigued by this than any other upcoming release, which is either a damning indictment of the release calendar, or a hearty testament to CDPR’s games (it is both, I think). It is simply kind of cool to pull a 10+ year old game out of retirement, dust it off, and jam a whole bunch of new stuff into it, and I am very eager to see just what form that new stuff takes.
So far, the biggest indication as to what the expansion will look like has come from CDPR co-CEO Michaล‚ Nowakowksi. Speaking in May, Nowakowski told investors that “It really depends on how you’re going to play, what’s your playthrough. But we’re definitely making a proper big expansion, is the message I would send out there.”

He also hinted that it might not be the only Witcher 3 thing CDPR is brewing: “Our early plans assumed that Songs of the Past could be released this year. However, we decided that it will be launching in 2027. We obviously have some other content currently at an advanced production phase as well. And while it’s obviously not on the same scale as the major expansion, we will plan to release it this year.”
