The mod we called ‘the best Fallout game you’ll play this year’ back in 2018 just launched on GOG

Fallout 4 remaster, Fallout: New Vegas remaster, Fallout 5, Fallout 3 prequel for Fallout 76, Fallout (the TV series) Season 3, and whatever Fallout game Obsidian is now working on… there’s a whoooooole lotta Fallout coming your way if you’re a Fallout fan.
But, uh, not for a while. What’s a Jet junkie to do in the meantime? Well, how about Fallout: New California, a full conversion mod for Fallout: New Vegas that just released on GOG. Here’s the trailer.

Fallout: New California may have just appeared on GOG but it’s not so much new as it is newly accessible. The project has been around for quite a while, and if you don’t believe me, we called it “the best Fallout game you’ll play this year” way back in 2018—and at that stage it had already been in development for roughly seven years, originally called Project Brazil.
Officially hosted now on GOG, it can now be installed and launched easily if you own Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition, rather than downloading the files and other half-dozen recommended mods through Moddb and managing the install yourself.
What’s Fallout: New California all about? Glad you asked. Here’s what I’ve skillfully cut-and-pasted from the mod’s page on GOG:
“In Fallout: New California you play as the kid from Vault 18. Orphan. Loner. Mutant. On the last big night of the Vault Ball season in 2260, you make a fateful decision that will change the course of your life—and eventually the future of the New California Republic,” the developers say.
You read that date right: it takes place before Fallout 2, back in the day of the original Interplay Fallout games. Cool.
“You will face the New California Republic under president Wendell Peterson, the New Reno Mob’s Bishop Family, the remnant Shi Clans, The Enclave Leonidas Squadron, the Super Mutant Army, and the bloodthirsty Raider Alliance that have banded together in the remote Athens-Tec Uranium Mine off the Long I-15.”
I haven’t played it yet myself, but some more text I strenuously Ctrl-C’d and Ctrl-V’d from our original article about the mod calls it “a remarkable achievement, and one of the most confident and professional mods I’ve ever played.” Sounds good to me.
