When you think of Star Wars, your mind usually flashes to lightsaber battles, Mandalorians, and the unspoken horror of Ewoks. But with Star Wars: Galactic Racer, developer Fuse Games is aiming to shine a light on a sportier part of that galaxy, as players will enter the Galactic Racing League.
Speaking to GameSpot, Fuse Games CEO Matt Webster explained that Star Wars: Galactic Racer was a chance to show a different side of Star Wars. While Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace had its iconic pod-racing sequence, recent films and TV series have largely focused on more recognizable elements of the mythos. But with Galactic Racer? Fuse Games gets to explore relatively uncharted territory in the franchise and tell a story.
“I think we know Star Wars fans; they crave a story,” Webster said to GameSpot. “They want to be immersed in the world of Star Wars. They want to see new things in this wonderful galaxy that they love, meet new characters, and we’ve got all of that. We’ve got locations where you can you can walk around, the Galactic Racing League is new and fresh. We’ve got some fantastic characters that the narrative team has crafted in collaboration with Lucasfilm, and these are all canon characters. We’re telling a story, a sports story, that you don’t really see. You know, a lot of Star Wars is the Force and prophecy, and here, it’s the everyday.”
“It’s sports, excitement, entertainment, and it’s these are things that we’ve not seen before. So, I think what we’re seeing, certainly from people who have played the preview, is that this is a racing game for people who don’t love cars. This is a Star Wars game for people who aren’t necessarily Star Wars fans. So if you’re in the middle, well, that’s absolutely the game for you. We feel like we’ve got a really broad appeal here, and we’re genuinely doing something new inside the racing genre.”
Fuse Games is also aiming to evolve the racing-game genre by fusing roguelite progression and replayability with high-speed events. You won’t have to wait too much longer to play it, as Star Wars: Galactic Racer launches on October 6 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
