The Legend of Zelda’s 40th Anniversary Direct brought with it many exciting announcements, including a title reveal for the upcoming film and a release date for The Ocarina of Time remake. But while both of these were fairly predictable announcements, no one could have prepared me for what director Eiji Aonuma oh-so-casually slipped in directly proceeding his demonstration of the game: The Ocarina of Time’s remake will feature (some) voice acting.
According to Aonuma, the characters that Link meets will be “fully voiced during in-game cutscenes,” similar to how voice acting is implemented in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. So while it seems like Link will remain the strong and silent type, various NPCs–such as Navi, Ganon, Saria, Darunia, Ruto, Impa, and Zelda, all of which can be heard in the trailer–will now have voice actors delivering their iconic lines. Nintendo has yet to confirm which actors are lending their talents to the game, but our first look at Ganondorf makes it seem as though Matt Mercer will return to voice the power-hungry tyrant.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake is slated to release on November 5, just a few weeks ahead of Grand Theft Auto 6–a game so hotly anticipated, other games have shifted their release dates to avoid any overlap. However, if there is any game that can go up against GTA 6 and come out on the otherside relatively unscathed, it has to be Ocarina of Time.
Zelda’s 40th Anniversary Direct is just the beginning of a potentially massive week for Nintendo. The company is also hosting a Nintendo Direct tomorrow, September 9, and we’re expecting big news.
