Who could have guessed it’s a bad idea to put AI in a fridge? Literally everyone, but that didn’t stop Samsung from selling fridges with an “AI Family Hub” to keep track of when you added fresh food and suggest recipes. Also, it randomly breaks when updated and all your food goes off.
At least, it did in Korea. Just before the Chuseok holiday, when everyone’s fridges were stocked for visiting family, a software update crashed them and spoiled their food. Good luck getting someone in to repair it over the holiday.
Samsung provided the following statement to Ars Technica: “The issue has been limited to Korea, with no impact identified to overseas markets. It occurred September 22nd afternoon due to an error during Samsung’s internal testing related to a refrigerator software update. Samsung immediately suspended the testing upon receiving reports of the issue. Samsung has activated an emergency response protocol, and its service centers are taking immediate action to address this issue.”
