Production has been underway on Prime Video’s God of War TV show since late February, but it’s come to a jarring halt as lead actor Ryan Hurst has suffered a serious injury while recording his role as Kratos.
According to Deadline, Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios have decided to recast the role after Ryan Hurst was injured on the set of the video game adaptation in late June.
Hurst put on a huge 40 lbs of muscle for the role, and had been filming the show for months before he tore a bicep while performing a stunt. Following surgery, he is now in recovery, but an injury such as this projects a four-to-six-month recovery period. To get back to full strength could take as long as a year. Given the nature of the role of Kratos, it seems like it would not be safe for Hurst to resume filming until mid-to-late 2027 at the earliest.
With tight deadlines to adhere to, the production schedule couldn’t accommodate the length of the delay, meaning the difficult decision to recast the role had to be made.
It’s expected that shooting will resume in mid-October, although there’s no word yet on who could potentially fill in for Hurst. Alongside this, it’s likely that the show will need to be reshot from the beginning for continuity purposes. Atreus, played by child actor Callum Vinson, would change in appearance too much from the original takes.
While the role of Kratos is in the air momentarily, the God of War cast also features Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Max Parker as Heimdall, and more.
