Turkish kebab PC from r/pcmasterrace
Though I don’t know if I like the idea of getting a little hungry every time I see my PC, I can say I’m kind of in love with the Turkish kebab PC that user Zestyclose-Salad-290 has shown off over on the PCMR Subreddit. And that’s because it’s truly weird one-of-a-kind.
For those unlucky enough to have never had a Turkish kebab, it is a mixture of meat placed on a rotisserie, and a carver is used to cut it up into small strips. In the PC homage, there is a spinning fan, GPU, motherboard, and PSU inside a glass case, with four fans at the bottom and four fans at the top to control the temps.
The pole in the center of the build has an RGB strip around it, illuminating all the hardware. It’s a truly ridiculous build, and one I’d assume was purely for show, if the creator didn’t also post it on builds.gg, a PC building website, to explain the methodology.
The build is kitted out with a Ryzen 5 3600X, 16 GB of DDR 4 memory, an MSI RTX 3070 Super and 1 TB of SSD storage. Interestingly, with them reporting the case being around $1,000, the case is by far the most expensive part of the entire build.
They reportedly took four months to build it, and didn’t even know if it would work until the third. They claim, “The slip rings are the key to how it can rotate without the cables getting twisted up.”
Slip rings tend to be used in machinery to give power to components that need to spin or move. Zestyclose-Salad-290 says slip rings “are used everywhere from your ceiling fan, to an MRI machine, to a merry go round, or to a power generating wind turbine.”
They also admit that the design is pretty impractical (who could have seen that coming?). They say, “This is a backward and unnecessarily complicated application of slip rings. Normally, only the bare minimum electronics are installed on the rotating part, with the rest being on the stationary base. I’ve put most of the electronics (the PC) in the rotating chamber, just because I thought it was cool that you could.”
Not only is the PC functional, but it has a little switch on the front that can set the motor to spin in slow motion, regular speed, or at “maximum speed”. No, it’s not clear if making the motor spin quicker makes the PC run any faster, but it will probably feel a bit more powerful spinning at high speeds.
