The news cycle this past week has been dominated with Grand Theft Auto 6 leaks, and for good reason, Rockstar studios has sprung a big one, with the self-ordained “Cyberleek” drumming up attention with waves of public manifestos, statements, and a little crypto farming on the side.
In preparation for its somewhat-confusing Netflix-exclusive gameplay reveal tomorrow, Rockstar’s finally acknowledged the leaks. Both confirming that they’re real beyond a shadow of a doubt (not that there was much doubt to begin with), and trying to salvage some hype.
“We know that many of you have been waiting to hear from us regarding the events of the past week,” reads a post to Rockstar’s Instagram. “It would be an understatement to say that having videos of Grand Theft Auto 6 gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for our team, and this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time.
“We are very sorry that everything has taken as long as it has—from getting the game finished (nearly there!) to sharing more details and official gameplay, and providing the community with everything you want to know.”
I’m not sure Rockstar needs to apologise for a videogame taking a long time to make, especially when 13 years have already passed since the last, but I’m a little old-fashioned in that I don’t think players are owed much of anything beyond fair consumer practices and, like, maybe getting to actually own the things they buy. It is, however, intriguing that the studio’s apologising for that given the whole Netflix thing which, speaking cynically, is essentially a six-hour early access gated behind a streaming service subscription.
I do feel bad for the developers, though—especially given that even those who were unceremoniously fired (in such a dramatic fashion that the then-UK Prime Minister commented on it) still want people to see the fruits of their labour. Take-Two’s bottom line has likely barely been dented by the leaks, but if I were a person working on a videogame for years, I’d be pretty exhausted by someone making a circus out of it.
“We are very excited for everyone to see the extended look tomorrow. It has taken longer than we wanted to get it ready, but as with everything we do, we know we need to exceed your expectations, and we are determined to deliver at the level you expect and deserve. While it is unfortunate that the intended game experience may now be impacted by some spoilers, we hope that everyone will wait a bit longer to experience the game for themselves on November 19.”
Rockstar ends the letter with a show of thanks: “We want to thank everyone in the community who has reached out with messages of support this past week—your words have meant more to this team than you can imagine. Ultimately, we are making this game for you, and without you, we would not have the privilege of making games.”
