After over a decade with no new entries, the Silent Hill franchise has been on a roll recently. Since 2024’s Silent Hill 2 remake brought the beloved, dread-inducing game back into the spotlight, the spin-off Silent Hill f took somewhat of a detour, taking the familiar atmosphere to 1960s Japan. Now, the upcoming Silent Hill Townfall is twisting the formula further, introducing a first-person perspective and taking us to a fictional town in Scotland. If you’re looking to be scared during the Halloween period, you can already score a discount on the latest entry before it’s even released.
The Silent Hill 2 remake and Silent Hill f prove that the series can still be popular, delivering some of the best horror games in recent years (so long as you forget Ascension and The Short Message exist). However, much like Resident Evil 7 brought back that series with a first-person perspective and a focus on survival horror over action, Silent Hill Townfall is putting us into the boots of Simon Ordell, who–in familiar Silent Hill fashion–has absolutely no idea what he’s doing in a fog-covered small town.
Moving away from the iconic third-person perspective of previous entries is a big risk, but it seems to be one made out of a love for the best horror games rather than simply sticking to the formula. Simon uses a handheld CRTV, which gives you a unique way of continuing the story that, without the perspective shift, would simply be another menu. For those old enough to remember a CRTV—and I might need to increase the size of the words to better suit our old age—this is more than just a fancy piece of technology. IT ADDS TO THE FEAR FACTOR.
Having to constantly check a different device while being hunted by not-so-friendly inhabitants reminds me of Alien: Isolation, which might be one of the greatest “scary games” ever made. Considering Silent Hill puts a focus on atmosphere rather than just monster chases or action, this mechanic adds another obstacle, making the experience more tense than what we’ve seen in typical entries.
While we don’t know if it’s one of the best horror games just yet–we’ll have to wait for launch to find out–you can still grab Silent Hill Townfall at a tasty pre-order discount, dropping the game to just $37.49 / £33.73 at Fanatical.
