Are you excited to search for all the shells in Mortal Shell 2? Similar to the first game, your character is but a near-featureless husk, almost without any powers of their own. However, once you discover long-forgotten heroes and legends, you’ll be able to utilize their game-changing abilities. Our guide has all the details that you need. However, because of the topic at hand, do expect a few spoilers along the way.

Where to find all shells
There are a total of nine shells in Mortal Shell 2. One is available during the prologue only, and the rest can be unlocked as you continue to explore the broken realms of Fallgrim. We’ll start off by talking about the shell from the prologue. Then, we’ll discuss those from the regions of Fainweald and Mammon.
Note: Once you’ve found each of the shells in the game proper, you’ll have to complete their respective memory sequences. From there, you should be able to level up your bond with them using a resource called Glimpse. This is done via the Shellkeeper NPC in the Marrow Keep hub. Each bond level you reach allows you access to a shell’s higher perk tiers.
Go through each shell’s first memory sequence to unlock them permanently.
Shell #1: Harros
Harros is someone that veterans of the first game will remember. He was pretty much the default/early-game option, offering a balanced playstyle that’s great for newcomers. This, too, is evident in the sequel, since you unlock him during the prologue. Unfortunately, by the time the prologue ends, you’ll lose access to Harros. This is completely irreversible as it’s part of the narrative arc. Goodbye, old friend!
At least you still have the means to utilize the harden mechanic.
Shell locations in the Fainweald region
The map below shows the locations of the shells in the Fainweald region. There are five here, but we’ll start off with Tiel and Proxima since they’re the closest to the first fast-travel beacon.
A map of the shells in Fainweald.
Shell #2: Tiel
Tiel, who was also playable in the first game, is one of the unlockable shells in Mortal Shell 2. To find him, teleport to the Widow’s Overlook beacon and turn around. Follow the dirt path straight ahead, which leads you to a yard with a hastily dug grave. Tiel is buried in that grave, so just interact with the corpse to unlock him.
Tiel’s corpse is in a shallow grave.
Shell #3: Proxima
The bounty hunter Proxima can be found fairly close to Tiel’s location. From the Widow’s Overlook beacon, go straight up the sloping path and cross the ravine to the next beacon: Blackridge Pass.
Next, make a right and run past the enemies fighting with the Treant, and then go left to where a glowing beacon is situated. Avoid the alien insectoid-like enemy here and enter the beacon. Inside, you’ll be able to interact with Proxima’s remains.
Get past this insectoid fella to reach the glowing beacon where Proxima is located.
Shell #4: Gragu
To unlock Gragu, you have to head all the way to the One-Legged Wolf beacon in the eastern part of Fainweald. Here’s what you need to know:
The area will remain inaccessible until you collect around five extra Ova. Once you siphon them in Marrow Keep, you’ll receive the Mether’s Breath power, which grants fast-travel capabilities and a means of removing corrupted growths.
Go north from the Mushroom Village Entrance beacon–i.e. the one in front of the Corrupted Gate–and cleanse the growth just beyond. You should see the One-Legged Wolf beacon just a short distance away.
From there, loop around and enter the tavern.
Gragu is sitting all by his lonesome in the tavern while others are making merry and getting drunk. He wants nothing to do with you until you collect something for him: an item known as the Heart of Vatra.
Note: You can also obtain the Lute sidearm from the tavern. It’s one of the best items that you can get early in the campaign.
Gragu wants the Heart of Vatra.
Now back to the Heart of Vatra in Mortal Shell 2:
From the tavern, keep going east while following the cliffside path. Then, jump across the chasm via the gateway.
At the temple grounds, you can pick up all sorts of goodies like a Synaptic Vessel and a Berserker’s Stone.
At the end of the path, you’ll be able to pick up the Heart of Vatra from a statue. As soon as you do so, dozens of enemies will emerge. You don’t need to fight them at all. You can simply run past them and look for exits until you make it back across the ravine.
Return to Gragu in the tavern and give him the item. He’ll immediately perish, though his death allows you to inhabit his husk.
The Heart of Vatra is in a temple complex to the east.
Shell #5: Eredrim
To unlock the Eredrim shell in Mortal Shell 2, you have to gain entry into a fortress in the northwestern part of Fainweald. You can learn about all the details in our Citadel of Penance guide.
Once inside, make your way closer to the center of the base by riding an elevator in the middle section. The floor in the middle will collapse, and you’ll find yourself in a fighting pit. Go ahead and tag Eredrim’s remains so you can switch to him, and be ready to eliminate the hostiles.
Be ready to break out of the Citadel of Penance once you obtain Eredrim.
Shell #6: Smert
The warrior monk Smert can be obtained if you go all the way to the Outskirts of Nochte, the swamplands in the western reaches of Fainweald:
The fastest method is via the jump gate just past the Great Arbiter of Flesh’s spawn area, which is also where you can pick up an item that toggles Night Mode.
Once you discover the Outskirts of Nochte beacon, check the nearby bluff where several cultists are preparing a blood ritual.
You can offer blood to the three pools by killing enemies that are standing in them.
Upon completing the ritual, you should be able to interact with Smert’s body.
Eliminate the cultists and complete the ritual to unlock Smert.
Shell locations in the Mammon region
The map below shows the locations of three more shells in Mortal Shell 2. They are all in the Mammon region. One of them is the Sester Genessa shell, an NPC from the first game.
Shell #7: Lazlo
Here’s what you need to do if you want to unlock the Lazlo shell in Mortal Shell 2:
From the Outskirts of Mammon beacon, keep going west until you arrive at the High Lord’s Courtyard. You’re going to face a lot of nasty enemies in these zones, including dozens of Armored Knights and even some Coffin Eye Beholders.
In the High Lord’s Courtyard, look for the entrance to the keep. There are items that you can loot from the sarcophagi at the sides, but your main prize lies straight ahead.
You have to defeat a boss named Vellen, Lord of Mammon, though it’s also possible to lure other enemies next to him to see if they end up fighting each other.
Once Vellen has been defeated, inspect the last chamber to find Lazlo’s corpse.
Lazlo’s body is interred in a crypt.
Shell #8: Sariel
The Sariel shell in Mortal Shell 2 is in the southeastern part of the Mammon region. Your goal is to tag the Silent Steps beacon so you have a spot where you can rest and recuperate. From there, use the jump gate to reach the high ledges. Sariel, who is in the middle of the open area, will attack you. However, once you’ve dealt enough damage to him, he’ll escape.
Push onward to the top of the steps to gain entry to the Chamber of Becoming dungeon:
You’ll continue your fight against Sariel in the inner chamber. Make sure you destroy the lightning rods to prevent him from resurrecting.
Once Sariel is dead, you’ll receive the Clockwork Scythe weapon.
You can also inhabit Sariel to watch his memories, before fully unlocking him.
In the last chamber, you’ll be able to pick up the Caged Hystrix sidearm.
It takes a lot of effort to finish off Sariel.
Shell #9: Genessa
Last but not least, there’s the Sester Genessa shell, which is more like a well-kept secret. To obtain the Genessa shell in Mortal Shell 2, you need to acquire the Sester’s Chalice. Here’s how:
To be clear, Sester Genessa is an NPC in the training grounds in Marrow Keep. Before anything else, make sure you exhaust all dialogue and tutorial sequence options.
Next, check the walls past the sarcophagi and look for a white glyph. Strike it to reveal a small chamber with a chalice. Make sure the Slayer Seal is in your inventory, but don’t equip it. This allows you to enter the Desolate Keep.
Make it all the way to the end of the Desolate Keep and grab the Blackmarrow Key. Upon exiting, talk to Genessa once more, who’ll admit that she knows of other secret places.
Continue exploring and progressing through the campaign normally. Later, you can head to the eastern landmass in the Mammon region and tag the Abbey Entrance beacon. Just a stone’s throw away, you’ll see a large field with red specters that flicker in and out of existence.
Interact with the object to get teleported to a separate realm: an arena where you have to fight the Sester Secundus boss. (We’re not gonna lie–we feel that this encounter is inspired by Star Wars, as you’ll soon find out.)
Defeating Sester Secundus nets you the Sester’s Chalice. Bring the Sester’s Chalice to Genessa in Marrow Keep. This will cause you to relive her memory.
Near the end of that sequence, you can accept or decline the offer from Genessa Prime. As far as we can tell, this does not lead to vastly divergent outcomes.
Obtain the Sester’s Censer from the boss encounter (left) and hand it over to Genessa (right).
Regardless of your decision, you’ll be able to switch to Genessa by talking to her in the training grounds. Also, unlike other shells, you upgrade her bond by talking to her, not the Shellkeeper NPC.
That does it for our guide on how to unlock all shells in Mortal Shell 2. Now that you know all the legendary warriors you can control, you might want to learn about all the armaments that you can wield in battle. If so, have a look at our weapons and sidearms guide.
